Need Help in Looking for a Book

Dear all,

There was a small press book published in Edmonds, Washington in 1991, titled “Autobiography of Fatah Engle” – by Qahira

I need the book for a few days to copy a photo in it of Bakti Engle (his wife and Qahira's mother).

Any help is greatly appreciated.

The Wintu or Wintun People of Mt. Shasta

D.H.O.’er’s

The original Peoples closest to Mt. Shasta are the Wintu People. In their creation story, their elders came to earth through a spring (in Panther Meadows.)

The Hoopa, Yaruk and Karuk Peoples are original peoples close by Mt. Shasta.

To all these people Mt. Shasta is a sacred place of pilgrimage.

I met a Karuk elder Charles RedHawk Thom and he said it is a tradition among many his people to visit Mt. Shasta once a year, not more.

It has been a priveledge to accompany RedHawk and his extended family to Mt. Shasta several times and do purification ceremony on the exact spot Red Hawks grandfather took him to ceremony as a young boy, beside the same sacred spring the Wintu people were “created” from.

This spring has some of the best tasting water, I’ve ever tasted. (In my past I’ve sold drinking water systems, I know water.) You might want to bring a jar to bring some water home with you.

This site is 35 to 40 minutes from the 2005 DHO Gathering site this year.

The Spring is called the Mother Spring of Mt.Shasta.

These people are all very much alive and have living Elders.

toward Spring 2005, not there yet,

Thanks for the info on the "locals" -

I am aware of three main springs on the Mountain:

  1. Widows Spring – which we will visit
  2. the spring on Panther meadows – where Ballard met St Germain (posing as a black panther) and was “awakened” and started the I AM Society –
  3. and the headwaters of the Sacramento River – which is the sweetest water I ever drunk –

And, amongst all our usual "frolicking amongst the trees" --- we also plan on:

  1. having at least 2 of Mother Marys folks with us for stories – and maybe a view of her Biography –
  2. and, Inshallah!  a visit to Shasta Abbey – to pay respects to our late God mother – Jiu Kennett Roshi –

by the by -

the only time I ever heard SAM make the all inclusive statement that he would taker as mureeds all of someones disciples - was refeering to Mother Mary - a number of us showed up - I was number 2 after Basira.

DHO 2005 at Shasta

Beloved of God,

Wishing you a healthy and blessed 2005 from Virginia.

VERY IMPORTANT:

There is a proposed formal change to our relationship within and to the Ruhaniate on the table.  We are being invited to alter our format of the past 28 years, and work within and under another model.

We have been given four possibilities to operate from, and are being asked to choose one of them.  Since this is a major shift in and to our relationship, I do not wish to make the decision without your active participation.

This will be the sub-theme of our meeting, and I truly wish all members of the D.H.O. to participate in this discussion.  Please attend if you are able.  Thank you.

I will also be bringing this up at our European gathering ( our 21st year) in Germany this May, so I am hopeful that our decision will represent the heart’s desire of all our family.

Our Summer Gathering will be on Mount Shasta in Northern California.

  • Dates: June 27 (Monday) to July 1 (Friday) 2005. This will allow us the opportunity to not only visit Shasta Abbey, but also the Mentorgarten in San Francisco.
  • Place:  Stewart Mineral Springs, Mt. Shasta – Northern California
  • Theme:  Interacting with the Unseen World:  Mother Mary, Shasta Abbey, The Great White Brotherhood, crystalline consciousness within the mountain, healing springs, etc.
  • Costs:  $400. (Note: all staff receives neither reimbursement nor honoraria)
  • Contact:  Jennifer Avian

Plus: Healing Rituals, zikrs, Ram Nam, walks and dance, Shasta Abbey (Murshid Sam's "guru sister," Jiu Kennett Roshi's Abbey), Mountain stories, great food, hot mineral baths, Fabulous Mountain Views & our traditional frolicking amongst the trees. Ya Hu!

And:  We hope to have some special guests from Mother Mary's sangha, and news (at least) of her new biography I wish to close with a few thoughts for the coming year:

Most importantly, let us again remember the words of the Master Jesus – "There will be wars and rumors of wars, but keep ye well in mind that which I have taught you."

As both our physical and political world undergo great calamity, we must be aware of Who we are, and what energy in flowing through us when we act.

I recommend the daily offering of the prayer Pir, with our concentration on Murshid SAM — asking him to guide us on the path which most furthers our spiritual growth.

Let us become the peace demonstrator who demonstrates Peace, the warrior who fights the internal war to become more not less Divine, the one who listens to God rather than only speaking to God. The one who is honest, not only to others, but to ourselves.

And, allow us the grace to re-dedicate ourselves so as to manifest our ideals of Selfless Service and a generous and open heart.

And, finally, please note that although Jennifer Avian is still our Camp Co-ordinator, Jude Sargent is now our secretary for all address changes, and Jean Pierre David remains our webmaster. Many thanks to you all for making this so smooth.

I send you all my love and blessings with my prayers for your growth and spiritual fulfillment in this newest year.

See you on the Mountain,

Yours in Service to the Real

re: DHO 2005 Meeting

Dear family..

Our summer 2005 gathering is upcoming.

We had spoken about meeting on Mt Shasta, and submersing ourselves in the “fabulous” traditions of the American Spiritual movement: i.e. The Great White Brotherhood, psychicism, and Mother Mary.

We hope to gather at Stewart Hot Springs – it has a long connection to the White Brotherhood, as well as excellent food, hot mineral baths, and good accommodations – as well as fabulous views of the Mountain.

The dates they have available are June 27 to July 1st.

And. they have raised their prices – so, our gathering will now cost  $400 per person. That’s all inclusive of food, and rooms and a meeting space.

So, who is willing to commit to coming?

Please let me know soonest, so Jennifer can book the space.

I send all love and blessings, and promise a real DHO report on Russia soon

The Story of Two Covers

Beloved ones of God,

Firstly allow me to thank all the folks who made the Pilgrimage happen so well and so smoothly. To Zuleikha who gave us a fabulous evening of dance, and story, of zikr, and love. To Asha who flew across country from one camp right into ours. To Mansur Johnson who brought the manuscript of his time with Murshid with him and read from it.  And, to all the dozen plus Murshidas, Shiekas, Khalifas, and the 50 beloveds who participated, and to our hosts, the Lama beans – especially Krishnasdas and Austin. Ya Shakur!

$11,000.00 was raised for Lama.  Alhamdullilah!

It is also time to share with the larger group the story of the two coverings, which were placed on Murshid's Maqbara,

1.

When Murshid S.A.M. fell and went into a coma (late December of 1970), I called “auntie” Helen in Oregon, and gave her the news and asked for her prayers. She said she would be coming down to hold my hand through all of this. And, when S.A.M. died, she came down.

She brought with her a green velvet cover, fully inscribed in Arabic calligraphy. She said that when she was in town (Klamath Falls) making a few purchases for the trip south, she heard Mother Mary’s voice clearly in her head. (Mother Mary had died the year earlier) “Turn right here.” Mother said. She turned as directed, and found herself in front of a gift shop. “Enter.” said mother, and she did. “Get that one for Saul.” she was told. “Tell Saul that the calligraphy means something. It is not just decorative.” She went to pay for the velvet coverlet, and found that she had just enough money to pay for it.  This was especially important, as she and her family were as poor as ‘church mice.’

She arrived the next day, and when we went to see S.A.M. in the Mortuary, she placed the cover over his body, and it remained there until he was autopsied and buried.

2.

About 2 months ago, a dear friend (Jerry Toporovsky) returned from a trip to India. When he was in Ajmir, he felt moved to purchase (for Saul) a cloth cover from the tomb of Moineddin Chisti. When he presented it to me, I heard the words Maqbarra and Murshid. So, I brought it with us to Lama to be placed on Murshid’s grave.

Both covers were placed on Murshid’s gravesite – I asked Mansur Johnson (as Murshid’s ‘senior’ mureed present) to assist me.

The cloth from Moinuddin Chisti remains at Lama. It will have a small box made for it, and it will “live” in the retreat cabin by the Maqbara.

The cover from Mother Mary (through Auntie Helen) returned with me.

Finally, the last morning, we did the healing ritual under the dome. Hadi David Hunter performed it. The energy was so deep and powerful it carried us all safely back home.
Alhamdullilah!

All love and blessings

Murshid SAM’s 33 Urs: A Remembrance

One of the wonderful things about being in the presence of a great teacher is how they can turn each and every interaction into an opportunity for the student to “catch the teaching.”

Of course, the lesson the student “needs” will vary with the student. In my case, I was needful of humility. Read on:

It was the late spring of 1970, as I recall. Murshid had been complaining about needing help around his San Francisco house on Precita, so as a willing mureed I showed up early to help.

“What do you want me to do?” I asked him. “Well,” he answered, “you’re the first here. There is dust everywhere. Start cleaning it up.”

So, I started in his bedroom, and somehow I was like a whirlwind — only very careful and very well organized. After a half hour, not only was his bedroom done, but I had finished the front room, and the dining room-library. I was just starting in the kitchen, when he came in from the backyard, and saw how much I had done (and how well). I was very proud of my self and my efforts.

“Stop!” he said. “You won’t leave anything to do for those who are still coming.”

“Yes Murshid,” I answered. And, as a “good boy,” I didn’t offer to mess things up again.

Happy 33rd Urs day Murshid. So many thanks for all the blessings and the greatness of spirit you shared with us so freely.

Ya Shakur Allah!

DHO Letter: A Few Thoughts for the Starting of 2004

Beloved Ones of God,

A few thoughts for the starting of 2004.

As we begin something, it tends to be less fixed, and more open to our influence. Thus, the beginning of a year offers us a unique opportunity to shape our interaction with it.

I suggest that we begin with focusing clearly on just what we wish this year to offer us: Inner Peace, Health, Happiness, Prosperity of Spirit, an End to War and Hostility, etc.

Take this concentration into your daily practice, and reinforce it with prayers, wazifas, visualizations and “seed thoughts.” Connect your own daily practice with this concentration, so that you do not view it as separate, but rather, as an integral part of your spiritual regimen.

Begin your practice by asking for help. Remember that we are not alone, and that our initiation links us with all the Illuminated Souls — especially our Founders — Hazrat Inayat Khan and Murshid Samuel L. Lewis.

And, speaking of Murshid S.A.M. — 2004 is his 33rd Urs Year. In other words, it has been 33 years since he danced away from his body. This year is a perfect time to renew our initiation, and to honor his many gifts to us.

33 Beads: A Pilgrimage to Murshid S.A.M.
Celebrating the 33rd Anniversary of his passing.
Friday July 9th to Wednesday July 14th 2004

Dear friends, family, and Lovers of Remembrance.

This year the Dervish Healing Order will host an OPEN GATHERING at the Lama Foundation. It has been 33 years since Murshid S.A.M. danced out of his body, and it is a fitting time and place to honor and remember the many blessings which flowed through him.

We shall offer a heart-felt spectrum of the many transmissions he so freely gave to us:

From “Sufi Dancing” and the Walks of the Prophets, to the “Zikr” of Swami Papa Ramdas, and the Heart Sutra (through Roshi Nyogen Senzaki).

There shall be Healing Rituals, the formal prayers of Hazrat Inayat Khan, and the singing of the Zikr of the heart by Sam’s grave site (the Maqbara). There will be fabulous vegetarian feasting, and, of course, our usual frolicking amongst the new trees. All Lovers of God are welcome to join with us.

Teaching Staff are all senior teachers in both the Dervish Healing Order, and the Sufi Ruhaniat International. Many teach and have students world wide.

This is an Open Pilgrimage, and all are welcome. Fees are only $300. (5 days at $60. per day.) And, all monies will go to the Lama Foundation — staff receive neither reimbursement nor honorariums.

Lama Foundation is an intentional spiritual community, which Murshid S.A.M. supported, and where he is buried.

For registration and more information, please contact: Jennifer

In addition to the Lama Pilgrimage, 2004 also marks our 20th consecutive year of bringing Murshid to Germany, and our 10th year in St. Petersburg, Russia. WOW!

I send you all my love and blessings and prayers for the continued health and growth of our spiritual family.

Yours in Service to the Real,

See you on the Mountain.

Report: Pan European Camp – June-July 2003

Most beloved of God,

This was the first time that the majority of the Ruhaniate’s “Most Senior Teachers” participated as teaching staff at a European Camp. Even better, we were joined by our Pir, Shabda Kahn. And, most of the Shiekhs/Shiekhas and Kaliphs/Kaliphas from Europe. A very powerful teaching crew indeed.

The scene was very lovely, with good food (too much pork), great cheeses, fine weather, and a wonderful extra large main hall for dancing and our All Camp Classes.

A note of acknowledgment to Saadi for being a masterful “Master of Ceremonies,” to Shabda for holding the post so well, to Fatima for her Darshan (ala Murshid) to the whole assemblage, to Mariam for presenting Frieda’s (and Moineddin’s) work so effortlessly, and to Kamae for her strength and presence. Ya Shakur Allah.

It was wonderful to be with our German and Russian families again (so soon) and, to meet our family from the British Isles. Inshallah! There shall be more interactions.

The one scene that stands out in my heart is the “Russian Room”: Seems that the folks from the former Soviet Union all decided to bunk together – one large room, and about 25 plus folks. A raucous party. It grew so loud one night I went over to ask them to tone it down. I knocked and was pulled into their circle. I immediately had Russian’s all over me, hugging and sitting on me and bathing me is so much love I could only stay and drink it in. Alhamdulliah! Or, as Murshid would have said – “That’ll teach you.”

What with the “high” I experienced from Shneda in May, the juice from this camp put me over the top, and I remained exalted and heart centered all through Turkey. Naturally I bought too many rugs.

I look forwards to seeing you all at next years (2004) DHO Gathering at Mt Home Resort in the No. California Wine Country – June 22 to 27.
2 Swimming pools, great food & frivolity amidst the trees.
