Mysticism of Sound in New York City, April 22

AN EVENING OF MUSIC AND MYSTICISM
AT SAINT PETER’S CHURCH ON LEXINGTON AND 54TH

Musicians, Poets and Mystics Present an Evening of Ragas, Solo and Chamber Music, Poetry and Readings from the Writings of Great Sufi Masters. International performing artists for this event include:
Michael Harrison, Hidayat Inayat-Khan, Shabda Kahn, Julia Khadija Goforth and Talia Toni Marcus.

New York, NY (March 17, 2005)— On Friday, April 22, 2005 at 7:30 PM Saint Peter’s Church on Lexington and 54th street will host an extraordinary evening of performances by musicians, poets and mystics. “Mysticism of Sound” is the focus and title of this event. Mystics of all ages universally love music. Sufis especially have taken music as a source of their meditation. Mystical expression of inner states of consciousness through music allows communion through tuning to unite performer, instrument and audience.

Shabda Kahn and Michael Harrison will open the evening program singing Indian Ragas. Both Harrison and Kahn are accomplished Raga musicians that teach and perform this ancient style of singing. Shabda Kahn has been a Sufi disciple since 1969. He is a direct disciple of Murshid Samuel Lewis (Sufi Ahmed Murad Chisti) and worked closely with the great American mystic Joe Miller. Shabda is currently the Pir (Spiritual Director) of the Sufi Ruhaniat International and the Director of the Chisti Sabri School of Music. Shabda spent 24 years (since 1972) developing as a vocalist under the guidance of the late Pandit Pran Nath, the master North Indian classical vocalist, who planted the 800 year old oral transmission of Chisti Sufi vocal music in the Western world. He is also a disciple of the illustrious Tibetan Buddhist Master, the 12th Tai Situpa Rinpoche.

Michael Harrison is an internationally acclaimed composer of “just intonation” piano music who performs ragas as well as concerts of his piano compositions. He studied with the late Pandit Pran Nath from 1978 to 1996 and continues his studies today with master vocalist Ustad Mashkoor Ali Khan. Michael teaches and performs concerts of North Indian classical music throughout the United States and India with Ustad Mashkoor Ali Khan, Terry Riley, Shabda Kahn, Steve Gorn, and as a soloist.

As a groundbreaking composer/pianist Harrison has developed one of the most distinctive musical styles of our time. He will also present a 45-minute version of his 95-minute work “Revelation” using a contemporary “just intonation” tuning that he invented. Working with ancient principles of harmonic resonance, Harrison’s music is an eclectic synthesis of North Indian and Western classical music, minimalism, and modal jazz. Through his expertise in alternate tuning systems and North Indian ragas, combined with a deep understanding of Indian and Middle Eastern rhythms, and his innate gift for melodic composition, he has created a revolutionary new sound for the piano. Harrison’s work Revelation was recently hailed by Stuart Isacoff of the New York Sun, and will be the co-subject of an upcoming feature article in the New Yorker by music writer Alex Ross.

The evening’s program will also feature Hidayat Inayat-Khan, son of the Indian mystic and musician Hazrat Inayat Khan, introducing his composition “La Monotonia.”

“La Monotonia” (opus 13) describes the various episodes of a meditative invocation, starting with a call to prayer (played by the altos and followed by the prayer-walk scored on a rhythmic pattern), all of which is part of the A-section of this slow movement, composed according to the principles of the classical “Lied-form.” The B-section is the actual prayer aspect with various thematic elements coming and going continuously in a fugue style while sticking all the way through to the monotonous formula of the Indian Raga Bhairavi, where no harmonic modulation prevails. This B-section culminates into an apassionata representing “victory” over the self, the atmosphere of which is emphasized by the classical western harmonic chords sounding in a full expressive outburst. The closing is a return to the A-section of the first bars, followed by a coda, all of which is expressive of the inner meditative call. (Hidayat’s great grandfather Mawlabakhsh Khan founded the first Academy of Music in India, invented the music notation system bearing his name and restored the fundamentals of Indian classical traditions in all fields of music).

Julia Khadija Goforth will present the poetry of Sufi Samuel Lewis “God’s Call” that will be read by Monick Mervilus David and Eddie Greenberg. Murshid Samuel L. Lewis, aka Murshid S.A.M. (Sufi Ahmed Murad), (dubbed ‘Sufi Sam’ by newspaper columnists in San Francisco in the 1960’s), was a forerunner of universal religion and unitive mystical experience. His poetry “God Calls” will be shared with dervish dancers turning towards their heart, becoming a torch of love in the presence of the One. Lewis died in 1971.

DHO 2005 at Shasta

Beloved of God,

Wishing you a healthy and blessed 2005 from Virginia.

VERY IMPORTANT:

There is a proposed formal change to our relationship within and to the Ruhaniate on the table.  We are being invited to alter our format of the past 28 years, and work within and under another model.

We have been given four possibilities to operate from, and are being asked to choose one of them.  Since this is a major shift in and to our relationship, I do not wish to make the decision without your active participation.

This will be the sub-theme of our meeting, and I truly wish all members of the D.H.O. to participate in this discussion.  Please attend if you are able.  Thank you.

I will also be bringing this up at our European gathering ( our 21st year) in Germany this May, so I am hopeful that our decision will represent the heart’s desire of all our family.

Our Summer Gathering will be on Mount Shasta in Northern California.

  • Dates: June 27 (Monday) to July 1 (Friday) 2005. This will allow us the opportunity to not only visit Shasta Abbey, but also the Mentorgarten in San Francisco.
  • Place:  Stewart Mineral Springs, Mt. Shasta – Northern California
  • Theme:  Interacting with the Unseen World:  Mother Mary, Shasta Abbey, The Great White Brotherhood, crystalline consciousness within the mountain, healing springs, etc.
  • Costs:  $400. (Note: all staff receives neither reimbursement nor honoraria)
  • Contact:  Jennifer Avian

Plus: Healing Rituals, zikrs, Ram Nam, walks and dance, Shasta Abbey (Murshid Sam's "guru sister," Jiu Kennett Roshi's Abbey), Mountain stories, great food, hot mineral baths, Fabulous Mountain Views & our traditional frolicking amongst the trees. Ya Hu!

And:  We hope to have some special guests from Mother Mary's sangha, and news (at least) of her new biography I wish to close with a few thoughts for the coming year:

Most importantly, let us again remember the words of the Master Jesus – "There will be wars and rumors of wars, but keep ye well in mind that which I have taught you."

As both our physical and political world undergo great calamity, we must be aware of Who we are, and what energy in flowing through us when we act.

I recommend the daily offering of the prayer Pir, with our concentration on Murshid SAM — asking him to guide us on the path which most furthers our spiritual growth.

Let us become the peace demonstrator who demonstrates Peace, the warrior who fights the internal war to become more not less Divine, the one who listens to God rather than only speaking to God. The one who is honest, not only to others, but to ourselves.

And, allow us the grace to re-dedicate ourselves so as to manifest our ideals of Selfless Service and a generous and open heart.

And, finally, please note that although Jennifer Avian is still our Camp Co-ordinator, Jude Sargent is now our secretary for all address changes, and Jean Pierre David remains our webmaster. Many thanks to you all for making this so smooth.

I send you all my love and blessings with my prayers for your growth and spiritual fulfillment in this newest year.

See you on the Mountain,

Yours in Service to the Real

DHO Letter: A Few Thoughts for the Starting of 2004

Beloved Ones of God,

A few thoughts for the starting of 2004.

As we begin something, it tends to be less fixed, and more open to our influence. Thus, the beginning of a year offers us a unique opportunity to shape our interaction with it.

I suggest that we begin with focusing clearly on just what we wish this year to offer us: Inner Peace, Health, Happiness, Prosperity of Spirit, an End to War and Hostility, etc.

Take this concentration into your daily practice, and reinforce it with prayers, wazifas, visualizations and “seed thoughts.” Connect your own daily practice with this concentration, so that you do not view it as separate, but rather, as an integral part of your spiritual regimen.

Begin your practice by asking for help. Remember that we are not alone, and that our initiation links us with all the Illuminated Souls — especially our Founders — Hazrat Inayat Khan and Murshid Samuel L. Lewis.

And, speaking of Murshid S.A.M. — 2004 is his 33rd Urs Year. In other words, it has been 33 years since he danced away from his body. This year is a perfect time to renew our initiation, and to honor his many gifts to us.

33 Beads: A Pilgrimage to Murshid S.A.M.
Celebrating the 33rd Anniversary of his passing.
Friday July 9th to Wednesday July 14th 2004

Dear friends, family, and Lovers of Remembrance.

This year the Dervish Healing Order will host an OPEN GATHERING at the Lama Foundation. It has been 33 years since Murshid S.A.M. danced out of his body, and it is a fitting time and place to honor and remember the many blessings which flowed through him.

We shall offer a heart-felt spectrum of the many transmissions he so freely gave to us:

From “Sufi Dancing” and the Walks of the Prophets, to the “Zikr” of Swami Papa Ramdas, and the Heart Sutra (through Roshi Nyogen Senzaki).

There shall be Healing Rituals, the formal prayers of Hazrat Inayat Khan, and the singing of the Zikr of the heart by Sam’s grave site (the Maqbara). There will be fabulous vegetarian feasting, and, of course, our usual frolicking amongst the new trees. All Lovers of God are welcome to join with us.

Teaching Staff are all senior teachers in both the Dervish Healing Order, and the Sufi Ruhaniat International. Many teach and have students world wide.

This is an Open Pilgrimage, and all are welcome. Fees are only $300. (5 days at $60. per day.) And, all monies will go to the Lama Foundation — staff receive neither reimbursement nor honorariums.

Lama Foundation is an intentional spiritual community, which Murshid S.A.M. supported, and where he is buried.

For registration and more information, please contact: Jennifer

In addition to the Lama Pilgrimage, 2004 also marks our 20th consecutive year of bringing Murshid to Germany, and our 10th year in St. Petersburg, Russia. WOW!

I send you all my love and blessings and prayers for the continued health and growth of our spiritual family.

Yours in Service to the Real,

See you on the Mountain.

2003 Meetings

Dear DHO Family,

I am sorry to say that we must cancel the DHO Gathering this year. There is just too much happening in my life to organize it. My apologies.

However, there is an alternative for those with a taste for travel: Haus Shneida DHO Gathering – May 26th (Monday) to June 1st (Sunday) 2003. The timing is very auspicious, as it is the best time to eat the local white asparagus – we call it ‘spargle’ time – yummy.

The location is in North Germany – between Hamburg and Hanover. The house is fantastic – our Godfather, Pir Hidayat Inayat Khan, calls it Camp Wonderland. Pricing is very moderate. The food is fabulous, as is the setting, location and general ambiance. And wait until you meet our family from Germany, Russia, Holland, and the Czech Republic. You will be welcomed with open arms.

The teaching crew will be: David Dalley (dance), Scott Sattler (choir), Ananda Cronin (sung zikr), Subhan Spencer (photography), Hakim Saul (healing ritual, walks, Zikr Allah).

For more information please contact: Neli & Martin Kuechler

all love and blessings, and again my apologies for this years cancellation – hopefully we shall see you amidst the trees and the greenery
